What a cruise does and does not include

  • Included: cabin, all meals aboard, a licensed naturalist guide, two guided landings or snorkels a day, wetsuits and snorkel gear on most boats.
  • Not included: the $200 national park fee, the $20 transit card, flights from Quito or Guayaquil, tips, alcohol, and on some boats the wetsuit hire. Add them with the calculator in cruise mode.
  • Seasickness: the west loop crosses open water at night; the seasickness meter shows the roughest months. Catamarans roll less than monohulls.

A typical 8-day mid-range cruise comes to about $6,803 per person including the park fee, transit card and flights from Quito; the same eight days on land with four day tours is about $2,627.

How many days should a Galápagos cruise be?

Itineraries run 4, 5, 6, 8 and 15 days. Eight days (seven nights) covers one full loop, east or west; four and five days are half loops that can be joined for the full circuit. Days 1 and last are travel days, so a 5-day cruise has three full days ashore.

East or west loop?

West (Isabela and Fernandina) is for flightless cormorants, penguins, the biggest marine iguanas and whale watching in the cool season. East and south (Española, San Cristóbal, Floreana) is for the waved albatross colony (April to December), Kicker Rock and the Post Office Bay barrel. North (Genovesa) is the bird island: red-footed boobies and frigatebirds.
